What To Expect From 1:1 Coaching With Susie

If we are working together on your personal recovery journey, it is important that you know that I don’t think anything is wrong with or broken about you. I also believe that you have within you the knowledge you need about how to move forward from narcissistic abuse and build the life you love to live. I know that you may not believe that yourself right now. I will help you to find that information inside of you. I won’t tell you what to do or how to proceed on your journey because I believe you will know how to move forward with the right support. Also, what might have been right for me might not be right for you. And I don’t want to lead you astray in any way. Rather, I want to empower you to follow your true path.

My role in your journey is to be a source of knowledge, encouragement, validation, and especially support when you feel overwhelmed and/or lost. I will walk beside you as you begin to make sense of your situation and start taking your power back. I will help equip you with tools and resources to support you in navigating out of abuse, should that be the path you take, and begin building the life YOU want to live.

A NARCISSISTIC ABUSE RECOVERY COACH YOU CAN TRUST

Coaching Vs. Therapy

img1 (33).png

Coaching and therapy are similar in that they aim to help an individual address problematic behaviors, beliefs and/or coping mechanisms. Both therapists and coaches listen to a client's life events and support them as they grow. Through this process, the client will discover possible changes for optimum inner health, affirmation for what's working well and will receive guidance for choices moving forward.

Therapists and other mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed professional counselors) can be thought of as the first line of defense. They are the trauma ‘surgeons’ that help a survivor work through the impact their trauma may have caused. Coaches aid trauma survivors, both as a peer and as a supporter, to help them reach their personal goals for their own recovery. Coaching provides support as a person begins to take greater levels of ownership in their future.

Therapy provides a wonderful space to examine what's happened to the client, both in the past and in present situations. The client will have support to process what took place, their emotions, and other times in their lives they've experienced something similar. Over time, patterns of behavior and themes of response are revealed that are either helpful or harmful for the client. This same dynamic can also happen between a client and coach. However, therapists take on a medical model and coaches take on a support model of care.

Coaches are a great part of a client's mental health team. Like sports coaches, they encourage, motivate, and champion a client to set goals and help reach them in recovering from trauma and life setbacks. Coaching tends to be more collaborative, working with clients as peers. Most often, goal setting is client directed.

Many individuals who have experienced trauma have adapted by disconnecting from themselves and others, and often times may be isolated from family and support people. Coaches provide a safe relationship for clients that can be modeled over time to reconnect with others and ultimately themselves. Coaches may have contact with their clients outside of their scheduled appointments.

Coaches do not diagnose or treat mental health illnesses. It is not uncommon for clients to be involved in both coaching and psychotherapy at the same time. Collaboration between coach and therapist is very possible and encouraged.
